Project Arts Centre 2011-12

In late 2011, I enlisted Lara Hickey, Megan Riordan and Aoife Spillane-Hinks to found TEXT|messages, a platform to give Irish theatre artists a chance to experiment with Shakespeare. We encouraged directors to pick no more than 140 lines from any given play - the same number of characters as in a tweet - and stage them in any way they liked. For the first run, I directed Twelfth Night.

With huge support from Cian O'Brien at Project, the experiment was a big success, and we staged three runs of shows between December 2011 and December 2012. We were also invited to Kinsale Arts Week with a selection of performances from the first round.

In 2014  Aoife and I ran a workshop course for the Abbey Theatre, introducing novices of all ages to the works of Shakespeare. Staged in collaboration with Bealtaine and BeLonGTo, it culminated with a performance on the Abbey main stage called "Be Not Afraid of Greatness". Very happily, this coincided with their production of Twelfth Night, the play that inspired the whole project in the first place!
