ABOUT

I am a theatre and opera director from Dublin, Ireland. I trained on Rough Magic's SEEDS programme and on the National Theatre Directors' Course in London. I was a Young Artist at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2014 and 2015.

Most recently I directed the stage premiere of Pat McCabe's play Country and Irish at Smock Alley in Dublin. In January 2022 I created a live version of Persians | The Podcast on the Peacock stage at the Abbey Theatre, in collaboration with Once Off Productions and Classics Now. It reworked the podcast I developed during the pandemic, introducing a new Irish-language translation of Aeschylus by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. You can listen to it here.

For the 2021 Wexford Festival, I directed Bellini's I Capuleti & I Montecchi on the mainstage of the National Opera House, making me one of very few Irish stage directors to have been afforded this honour. The production was live-streamed for World Opera Day, and you can watch it on YouTube here. I will return to the festival in October 2022 to direct the premiere of Colm Tóibín's opera adaptation of his novel The Master

In June and July 2021, working with John O'Brien, I directed reimagined, Covid-compliant versions of La Bohème, La Traviata and Così Fan Tutte for Cork Opera House and their Cara O'Sullivan Associate Artists. Earlier in 2021 I developed a touring production of King Lear for Festival in a Van, following a version of Romeo & Juliet in autumn 2020. Pre-Covid, I directed a new revival of Noelle Brown and Michele Forbes' POSTSCRIPT for a tour to London and a revival of To Hell in a Handbag at the newly-restored Bewleys Café Theatre in Dublin. During the 2019-2020 season I remounted Tomer Zvulun's production of Silent Night in Salt Lake City, and was at work on his Eugene Onegin for Palm Beach Opera when the cancellations began in March 2020. Productions of The Flying Dutchman for Utah Opera and Paper Boat (a new opera by Elaine Agnew and Jessica Traynor for Galway 2020 and Irish National Opera) were likewise cancelled.

For the 2018-19 season I was the The Jerry & Dulcy Rosenberg Resident Stage Director at the Atlanta Opera. During the season I remounted Silent Night at Austin Opera, as well working as staff director on Charlie Parker's Yardbird, West Side Story, Eugene Onegin, Maria de Buenos Aires and La Traviata in Atlanta. This was followed by a summer in Cork, where I directed the third installment of The House Trilogy for my company Ulysses Opera Theatre, and the female version of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple at the Everyman.

I studied at Trinity College, Dublin, at Royal Holloway in London, and at the School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA. I lived in Tokyo for two years, on a Japanese Government Scholarship at Waseda University. While I was in Japan I spent over a year studying with director Yukio Ninagawa. My book about him was published in 2020 by The Arden Shakespeare. An expanded paperback version came out in September 2021.

For four years I wrote and presented a weekly podcast about Shakespeare's Hamlet. The main body of work concluded in July 2021, but the entire project is still available here.
